Sheng Wang, Chinatown NYC

I LOVE CHINESE FOOD. I mean home-style, authentic, Chinese food. And luckily the Chinatown in New York has some of the best authentic Chinese food on this side of the world. I discovered Sheng Weng through what I think was, divine intervention. I get Yelp emails to my inbox because I love food! The email of the day was the best ramen spots. This instantly made me crave a big bowl of home-style ramen! This restaurant had amazing reviews so I had to trek downtown to try it for myself. From the outside, the place looks ordinary, much like the other Chinese shops in the area. But step down into a world of wonderful! Apparently I'm late on discovering this gem because it was pretty busy for dinner. But thankfully, the restaurant has plenty of seating. This place is unique because this place pulls their own noodles! They also make their wontons and dumplings - the old fashioned way - and right in front of you too! I ordered 12 steamed dumplings to start, which costed a few dollars, and it was so perfect! I ordered a bowl of beef noodle ramen and it was SO good! You can taste the freshness in every dish. The prices are cheap but the food is not cheap quality! This place is blows my mind for ramen!  You just have to try it for yourself!

Danny Brown, Queens NY

One of my favorite restaurants in my hometown of Forest Hills is Danny Brown. A Michelin recommended restaurant in Queens? Yeah, you bet!  It is such a hidden gem tucked away on a small street. It gives you a Manhattan feel but with a local crowd. You'll see new and old families dining here as well as young trendsetters. The wine list is extensive, the food is always impeccable, and the service has never disappointed me. There is something for everybody here. As posted on their website, "Danny Brown... embodies the pleasures of a French wine bar, an Italian "Enoteca," and a Spanish Tapas bar, as well as that of a conventional restaurant." Below are some plates I have tried here - a cheese plate, steak, and confit of duck. Whenever I'm in my neighborhood, I try to have a meal here - reservation permitting! The wait can sometimes be long. But there is a reason why its always crowded, so the wait is worth it!

WD-50 - Molecular Gastronomy

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS KIND

WD-50 is one of the Top 10 best Molecular Gastronomy restaurants in the world. It lives up to it's reputation because this was one of the most unique dining experiences of my life. Wylie Dufresne is the owner and one of the pioneer chefs of this "food-science" genre. This man is an absolute artist in his creation of all the dishes from the cooking methods to the styling. He was first made famous on Bravo TV, but his excellence has carried him beyond 15 minutes. The food is fascinating with its play on flavors and presentation. It is truly a cerebral food experience. After dinner, our table was graciously invited to tour the kitchen and I met the man himself creating the dishes! One wouldn't think the actual owner would be the person cooking all of the food, but he humbly said, "of course I'm cooking back here, my name is on the door." The entire kitchen is meticulous, very much like a laboratory. Overall, the food and experience was amazing, but not for everybody, especially if you prefer traditional "comfort" style food.

Croton, New York

Warm Weather = Lobster Roll, to me. Croton was a tavern/bar that I jumped into for lunch. Reading the menu, I saw this Frangelico Lobster Roll that jumped out to me - fresh lobster salad with Frangelico liqueor served on a brioche hot dog bun. I've never heard of anything like this before so I had to try it! It was pretty good, although I will say it didn't blow me away. The lobster salad was good - not too much mayo, but the bread was too doughy. I think I just like huge jumbo lobster meat! :) However, what I will say about this place is that the sweet potato fries were super! But you can't really mess that up, right?

Baked by Melissa

I have to blog about a delicious dessert that I have at least once a week. Its right by my office, and my vendors always bring them in. Baked by Melissa is a cupcake shop that only makes mini, quarter-sized, cupcakes. Melissa's shop began because she hated her job as an assistant media planner, and her brother told her to bake cupcakes - mini-sized. And voila! These little babies were born. Now they're the new craze, getting press left and right and expanding locations. And the kicker... she's only 25! I wish I thought of this idea! Each cupcake ranges from 70-90 calories and I think that's a lot for something so tiny. But it only makes sense that they are probably made with a lot of butter because they're very moist (and delicious). My personal favorite is peanut butter and jelly on the top right! My second favorite is tie-dye, row 1, column 2, 2nd and 3rd one down. Try them all! But be careful, because they're like potato chips - once you have one, you can't stop! I have to force myself to stop at #3 :)

Let's go to Brasil!

Go to the Macy's Flower Show in Herald Square to teleport to Brasil. The theme this year is the Gardens of Paradise. The Flower Show, which has traditionally been held inside the store, has moved to an outdoor tent in the intersection of Broadway Plaza. It is an over-sized greenhouse. The show this year is exotic, energetic, and bursting with color.  You walk through the native plants and flowers of the Amazon forest, cross a bridge, and end up in front of a hidden waterfall. But I enjoyed most was how the setup looked like someone's colorful house and garden in Brasil.  (I love the flower chandelier!) Come here and you'll feel like you're in Rio! And if you have time, go to the windows on the 34th street side and you'll see a Carnival celebration complete with sounds of the jungle.  This is on display now until April 7th, during store hours.  The lines aren't too long around noon and the price is free.  A free event in New York - such a rare find!

Statler Grill, New York City

Statler Grill is located minutes away from Pennslyvania Station and Madison Square Garden. It is a steakhouse but I was simply interested in seafood that day so I got a lobster Club Sandwich. The menu says they use a whole 1 1/4 Lb Lobster, Mayonnaise, Lettuce, Bacon, Onion, Avocado on a Brioche Bun, With Shoestring Potatoes. I personally like whole lobsters used in my sandwiches so the description got me. I thought it was very good, except for the bread. Personally, it was too much bread for me. If this came on a bun, it would be perfect. However, the service was good and it wasn't too packed compared to most restaurants in the area if you're looking for a quick lunch spot. My only other criticism is that its a little expensive for what you get. For the same price point, there are comparable or better restaurants. But its not bad. I will return here, and when I do... I'll try the steak!

Update: A friend said to try the Lamb Shanks... Thanks Benny!

David Burke, Soho, New York

Recently I tried an amazing restaurant in Soho called David Burke's Kitchen. The restaurant is beautiful. It has a barn-yard feel with its crisp images of produce, poultry, and farmers on the walls. There is gingham accents sprinkled throughout the place, such as the table napkins and woven baskets. The ceilings are wood planks, the tables are bare wood, the beautiful "tree-house" bar is wood, and there is a visible beautiful wood carving station. It is downstairs of the James Hotel but it feels like a modern airy industrial loft with its high ceilings and infinite windows that are street-level. The food is unique and modern American, presented in the creative and whimsical style that is Burke’s trademark. The ingredients taste like they are the highest quality, as if it were fresh off the farm. Whether you choose to go here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you won't be disapointed by the quality or the service.

MacarOn Cafe, New York City

Ever since my trip to Paris last Spring, I have been so nostalgic about everything French.  One of my favorite desserts of all time is Macarons! A French macaron is a sweet meringue-based cookie made with egg whites, sugar, almond flour, and is filled with either a buttercream, jam, or chocolate ganache. They're soft, chewy yet flakey, and so dainty and beautiful! The best macaron shop in the world is Laduree on Champs Elysees in Paris. One actually just opened one up in New York on Madison Avenue that I need to go there the next time I miss Paris! Well luckily, I happen to work near an amazing macaron shop that's just as good and is so much more convenient than Paris or Madison Avenue called MacarOn Cafe. The lines are out of the door in the morning and at lunch, but well worth the wait. The coffee is always fresh and organic and the macarons are gluten free and delicious. If you haven't tried a macaron yet, you need to ASAP! Next time you see this shop either in Midtown West or their other location in Midtown East, be sure to stop here for a quick break!

MacarOn Café is located on 59th Street between Madison and Park Avenues

Truffettes de France

Godiva who?! THIS is by far my favorite chocolate on earth. For all the rich dark chocolate lovers out there, Truffettes de France is your PLEASURE PRINCIPLE! These truffles come with special directions on how to eat them and the ideal temperature to store them. Based on that alone, one can immediately tell these are NOT ordinary truffles. What makes this chocolate stand out to me is that they are dusted in cocoa powder! It is unlike any chocolate I have ever tasted! And trust me, I've tried every brand under the sun. You bite into them and your teeth will sink into a soft, sensual paradise and your world literally stops for a few minutes. Yes. That's how good it is!  So what does a chocolate that comes with precise instructions on how to eat it taste like? Well, scientists say that cacao contains as many as four hundred different identified aroma chemicals - from floral, fruity, earthy, spicy, nutty, and everything in between. Once you taste the cocoa powder, the chocolate goodness just melts in your mouth like butter. One truffle is simply not enough and you have to literally have some serious self control to not want to eat 5 at once! But trust me, even if you only eat one, your taste-buds will be immensely satisfied. This is truly a chocolate lover's aphrodisiac. And they're only $15-20. So what are you waiting for?... Buy them! And let me know what you think!

Roti Canai

Roti canai (pronunciation tʃanai) is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread found in Malaysia or Indesia. It is known as Roti Prata in Southern Malaysia and Singapore, and is similar to the Indian Kerala Porotta. When making this, the dough misture is constantly kneaded and folded over itself repeatedly so it can poof and rise. The ideal roti canai is circular and flat, but fluffy on the inside, and light and flaky on the outside. It is served folded like a fortune cookie, and is served with a chicken and potato curry dip. You eat this bread with your hands by pulling it apart and dipping it or by using it to sop up any sauce.

Being that I am part Indonesian, I LOVE their food. This is one of my favorite appetizers and if you ever find yourself looking at this as a choice on the appetizer list, be sure to order it! That's an order.

Masala, Woodside, Queens

Below are photos of an Indian crown jewel in Queens.  In addition to the appetizer and entree below, we also got this yogurt drink called the lassi and the mango lassi - and they were both amazing. The lassi is a pistachio flavor and I liked that better. The beef was better than the chicken because it had more heat to it, which I liked. The service was quick and the people were friendly. I would definitely come back here.

Wolfgang Puck, New York City

If you're a carnivore, this filet is for you.  Served with a buttery side of potatoes and salad.  Love the pink cow on top! Its like the cherry topping to a sundae!

Scarpetta, New York City

Scarpetta is an expression which means" little shoe" in Italian but also refers to the bread that you use to sop the lingering sauce. And it is the perfect metaphor for this restaurant because it will make you want to finish every last drop of food on your plate because it's that good! This restaurant is the brain-child of chef Scott Conant located in the Meatpacking district of New York. If the name sounds familiar, you've probably seen him on Food Network on Chopped or 24 Hour Restaurant Battle.  I actually tried to go to this restaurant in Miami at the Fountainebleau, but the reservations were all booked up! That was a clear indicator that this is a restaurant that I needed to try. I'm glad I finally got to dine here because the food was well worth the wait.

Like most high-end restaurants, they start off the evening with a gourmet basket of bread. However, what was notable about this bread was that it was stuffed with sausage  and or salami. They pair the bread with an assortment of butter, olive oil, and this chunky tomato paste dip that's amazing. For the primi piatti, you have to get the Polenta. It is creamy, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, with TRUFFLED mushrooms.  As you know by my blog name, I love anything with truffles! Why are they so good?! The Polenta and the Seared Sea Scallops were my favorite. The Scallops were cooked perfectly and explodes in your mouth with flavor.

For the pasta, if you're looking for something sweet, the Pumpkin Consonsei is your dish. Its stuffed with pumpkin and ricotta, and drizzled with amaretto. In my opinion, it can also double as a dessert. But if youre looking for savory, I'd recommend the next 2 dishes in the Piatti section.

For Carne, the server recommended the Veal Loin. It's a refined version of osso buco without the bone. The outside is herb-crusted, but the meat inside is tender. If youre looking for seafood, the Black Cod is an amazing piece of fish and has been compared to Nobu grade, by the way of Naples. The caramelized fennel and slow roasted tomatoes its paired with is harmonious to the flavor.

For Dolci, the Chocolate cake is a classic. It's a mini molten lava cake with salted gelato. Enough said - its sweet, its salty and it will be devoured in 4 seconds. The Sweet Potato Bombolini was good and had a hint of orange essence. If you like donuts, you will like this. However, my favorite dessert was the Coconut Panna Cotta. Panna Cotta is made by mixing cream, milk, sugar, and gelatin and letting it cool. The guava sauce adds a uniqueness to the coconut flavor that makes it a winning pairing.

The ambiance is great. Its dimly lit, its intimate, and I guess you kind of do feel like you're in a "little shoe."  Overhead is a retractable glass ceiling that I imagine is divine in the summertime and the horizontal mirrors held up by luggage straps along the walls gives the place a whimsical factor. Overall - a great experience.
